Transforming Lunchtimes at Abington Vale Primary: A Head of School’s Perspective

Before the Better Lunchtimes Project was introduced, Dawn, the Head of School at Abington Vale Primary, described lunchtimes as challenging. “The children lacked independence, the noise levels were high, and serving lunches wasn’t as efficient as we wanted,” she explains.

These issues made the lunchtime environment stressful for both staff and students.

Following the recommendations of School Health UK, the school has seen significant improvements. “Children are now serving themselves, collecting their own water and cutlery, and playing in designated zones on the playground,” says Dawn.

This change has empowered the children, giving them more responsibility, which has, in turn, helped reduce noise and improve overall behaviour.

The reorganisation of the playground into specific zones has also been a game-changer. Instead of chaotic free-for-alls, pupils now engage in structured play, creating a calmer and safer environment. Lunchtime supervisors can manage the different zones more effectively, ensuring that all students are playing safely and enjoying their break.

Dawn adds, “The staff are much happier and more proactive in their roles now that the environment is calmer and more organised.” The improved structure has not only benefited the students but also the team, who are now better able to support the children during lunchtimes.

Perhaps the most important change has been the shift in children’s enjoyment of lunchtimes. “It’s clear that the children are enjoying their lunchtimes more now, and the overall experience is much more positive,” Dawn notes.

Thanks to the Better Lunchtimes Project, Abington Vale Primary has seen improvements in both the dining hall and playground. “It’s great to see lunchtimes running smoothly now,” says Dawn, reflecting on the positive outcomes of the project.

When asked if she would recommend School Health UK, Dawn didn’t hesitate. “Yes,” she says enthusiastically, grateful for the support and advice that has led to such a successful transformation.
