Before implementing the Better Lunchtimes Project, Parkhill Infants' School faced several challenges during lunchtime. Rebecca, a staff member, recalls how long waiting times and overcrowding made lunchtimes stressful. "There were too many children in the playground and lunch hall, and it was very noisy," she explains.
These conditions not only created a chaotic atmosphere but also made it difficult for children to enjoy their playtime or their meals.
After the School Health UK team, led by Paul, conducted a thorough analysis, they recommended structural changes that transformed the lunchtime environment. "We reduced the total number of children in one place, making playtimes safer, and zoning the playground," says Rebecca.
These adjustments led to smoother, quieter lunchtimes where children could focus on their meals and safely engage in activities during playtime.
Rebecca highlights how the project didn’t just benefit the children but also had a positive impact on staff. "The lunchtime supervisors are happier and more proactive in their roles now," she says.
With a clearer structure and improved environment, staff found it easier to manage the children, leading to better behaviour and overall harmony during lunch.
The changes also impacted the children's dietary habits, with more students opting for school meals and healthier packed lunches. Rebecca adds, "Paul was great with the analysis and solutions to make lunchtimes better."
The collaboration between School Health UK and Parkhill Infants' has significantly improved the quality of lunchtime, creating a more positive and efficient experience for both students and staff.
Would Parkhill Infants' School recommend the Better Lunchtimes Project? Absolutely! As Rebecca puts it: "Yes!"
