At Oakwood Primary School, we recently had the opportunity to take part in School Health UK’s Lunchtime Staff Training programme. Prior to the training, our lunchtimes were often challenging, with incidents occurring frequently, unstructured playground spaces, and staff lacking confidence in managing the flow of students effectively. We knew that change was needed, and School Health UK provided the support and guidance we were looking for.
Building Confidence Among Lunchtime Staff
One of the most immediate changes we saw after the training was an increase in our lunchtime staff’s confidence. Many of our staff members previously felt overwhelmed by the demands of managing a busy lunchtime. School Health UK’s training gave them clear, practical techniques for behaviour management, communication, and conflict resolution, and now, they’re equipped with the skills to handle any situation that arises. Staff members have commented on how much more empowered they feel, knowing they have strategies to create a positive, safe lunchtime experience for all students.
A More Organised and Enjoyable Playground
Another significant improvement has been the structure and organisation of our playground. Before the training, students tended to crowd in certain areas, leading to congestion and, often, minor incidents. School Health UK introduced the concept of zoning, which has allowed us to create designated areas for different activities—quiet play, sports, and social zones. This has given students space to engage in activities they enjoy while keeping everything organised and manageable for our staff.
Not only has this improved the experience for students, who now have options that suit their interests, but it has also helped our staff feel more in control. With each zone clearly defined, our team can manage their designated areas with ease, resulting in a more enjoyable lunchtime for everyone involved.
A Noticeable Drop in Incidents
One of the most impressive outcomes of School Health UK’s training has been the decrease in incidents during lunchtimes. Since implementing the strategies we learned, we’ve observed a noticeable reduction in disruptive behaviour and accidents. The structured approach provided by School Health UK has not only kept our students engaged and respectful of their play areas but has also created a calmer environment that naturally reduces opportunities for incidents.
Our leadership team has noticed the positive impact this has had on the school day as a whole. Students return from lunch more settled, and our teachers are spending less time addressing lunchtime-related issues, allowing more time for learning.
Overall Impact on Oakwood Primary School
School Health UK’s Lunchtime Staff Training has been a transformative experience for Oakwood Primary School. Our lunchtime team now feels confident and well-prepared to manage lunchtimes, our playground is organised and enjoyable for students, and incidents have dropped significantly. We’re thrilled with the positive changes we’ve seen and look forward to continuing to use the strategies that School Health UK has provided.
For any school considering lunchtime staff training, we wholeheartedly recommend School Health UK.
The training has improved not only our lunchtimes but also the overall school environment, making a lasting difference for both staff and students.
